Ruhle Named Titans’ Assistant Baseball Coach
Vern Ruhle, a former major league pitcher, has been named assistant baseball coach to Larry Cochell at Cal State Fullerton.
Ruhle, 38, spent 13 seasons in the major leagues, playing for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians and Angels. His best season was 1980, when he went 12-4 with a 2.38 earned-run average for the Astros, NL West champions that year. He retired in 1986 after a 1-3 record for the AL West champion Angels, finishing with a career record of 67-88.
Since retiring from baseball, Ruhle has worked in real estate in the Long Beach area. He also has scouted for the Astros and worked with pitchers in the organization’s winter program.
“Vern is a quality baseball man with excellent teaching skills,” Cochell said. “Obviously, he is going to handle our pitching staff. We’re excited to hire someone of his caliber.”
Ruhle replaces Dennis Rogers, who is head baseball coach at Riverside City College.
