The car of a U.S. diplomat was set ablaze in Arab East Jerusalem in a rare anti-American attack that police blamed on Palestinian nationalists. The U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem called the attack on the car of Deputy Consul David Wimm an act of vandalism. The car had been parked in front of Wimm’s house. There was no claim of responsibility. In another development, the Israeli army disclosed that soldiers in the occupied areas have been authorized to fire live ammunition at any masked Palestinian who refuses to obey orders to halt. Previously, soldiers could use live ammunition only if the masked suspects were armed.
