GM to Close Georgia Plant: General Motors Corp. said it will indefinitely close its assembly plant in Lakewood, Ga., sometime after March, idling another 2,200 hourly and salaried workers. The giant car maker, which has closed more than a dozen assembly plants since late 1986 in efforts to trim and modernize operations, told workers at the plant that there is currently no new product slated for the 61-year-old facility. An additional 1,000 workers already are on indefinite layoff at the plant, which builds the full-sized Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Estate Wagon rear-drive models.
