CHAPEL OF LOVE: Anything can...
CHAPEL OF LOVE: Anything can happen on the Mark & Brian Show. So when the hot KLOS-FM morning deejays (who beat out KIIS-FM’s fading funnyman Rick Dees in the last Arbitron ratings) flew to Las Vegas for their 2nd Anniversary show last week, we expected fireworks. Instead, wearing microphones hidden in the bills of their baseball caps, Mark (Thompson) and Brian (Phelps) secretly broadcast a live wedding ceremony. Not just anyone’s wedding. The jocks strolled into the Wee Kirk O’ the Heather wedding chapel, plunked down $170 and got married. To each other. (When he completed the ceremony, the unsuspecting minister turned to the jocks and said: “You may now kiss the groom.”)
“This was the biggest chance we’d ever taken,” Mark & Brian said afterward. “From the minute we flew in there, we didn’t have any real control over the variables. The people at the chapel had no idea we were on the air, so we didn’t know what might happen.”
The duo initially planned to broadcast from a local casino, but were stymied by legal restrictions. The jocks opted for a wedding. “We wanted to do it at the Graceland Chapel--Vegas has all these places where you can be married by Elvis impersonators--but we got turned down because they wouldn’t marry two men,” Mark & Brian said. “But the people at Wee Kirk were great. They take their weddings very seriously. They have flowers, ribbons--a big pulpit. When they marry someone, it’s forever. At least till they get their $170 bucks.”
