Flores Wants Hotel Taxes to Boost Tourism

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores proposed Friday that the city set aside hotel taxes collected in San Pedro to promote tourism in the community.

In a motion to the City Council, Flores said increased tourism could offset the loss of jobs in San Pedro from the closing and relocation of several industries. Todd Shipyards, for example, has decided to close its San Pedro operations, which employed 5,600 workers as recently as 1983.

“Promoting San Pedro as a tourism destination would replace lost revenue while increasing the business and economic base of the community,” Flores said in the motion.

The proposal was sent to the council’s Budget and Finance Committee.
