Ach du Lieber! Milk Bar at Oktoberfest
MUNICH, West Germany — The 156th Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest annual beer bash, opened Saturday in Munich with a milk bar joining rows of beer tents for the first time.
The traditional 12-gun salute reverberated across Munich as Mayor Georg Kronawitter tapped the first keg of beer.
Officials expect more than 6 million tourists for the 16-day festival.
The traditional liter stein of beer costs about $3.50 this year, slightly more than last year.
After allowing alcohol-free beer in 1986, festival organizers finally gave in to dairy farmers’ five-year campaign to set up a milk bar.
