Wyoming Beats Hawaii With Defense
LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming’s defense, porous in its first two games, jelled behind Mitch Donahue’s two sacks as the Cowboys beat Hawaii, 20-15, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game.
Wyoming is now 1-2 and 1-1 in the WAC, while Hawaii, a 63-10 winner over Cal State Long Beach last weekend, is 2-1 and 0-1.
Donahue, moved from end to tackle at the start of the season, was shifted back to right end by Coach Paul Roach.
The junior’s relentless pursuit inspired a defensive unit that had allowed 923 yards in Wyoming’s first two games but yielded just 253 yards Saturday.
A second-quarter fumble recovery by Donahue led to a Wyoming touchdown that gave the Cowboys a 10-6 lead. The score came on an 11-yard pass from Tom Corontzos to Ted Gilmore.
