Big Ten Roundup : Ohio State Pulls Away in Second Half, Beats Oklahoma State, 37-13
Carlos Snow ran for two touchdowns and Greg Frey threw for two more on the biggest passing day of his career as Ohio State beat Oklahoma State, 37-13, Saturday at Columbus, Ohio.
Frey, a junior, completed 16 of 21 passes for 285 yards with one interception as Ohio State opened its 100th season of college football.
Frey’s best previous passing day was 24 of 37 for 281 yards with one interception and one touchdown in a 36-33 victory over Louisiana State last year.
Oklahoma State fell to 0-2 in the first meeting ever between the teams.
The Buckeyes took the lead for good, 16-13, on a two-yard run by Snow with seven seconds left in the first half.
A critical series followed a 36-yard interception return by Oklahoma State’s Jason Juhl to the Ohio State six-yard line early in the third quarter.
With Ohio State holding on to its 16-13 lead, the Cowboys lost a yard on a run, nearly threw an interception, were called for illegal procedure and then completed a pass out of bounds. On fourth down, Cary Blanchard missed a 29-yard field goal.
Ohio State then scored on its next three possessions to put the game out of reach.
Minnesota 30, Iowa State 20--Scott Schaffner passed for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns and Darrell Thompson ran for two more scores in leading the Gophers over the Cyclones at Ames, Iowa.
Schaffner threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to Pat Tingelhoff in the first quarter and 54 yards to Paul Hopewell in the third period as Minnesota won its opener for the 13th time in 14 years.
The sophomore completed 12 of 18 passes in topping his previous best of 201 yards against Indiana last year. He left the game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.
Iowa State (1-1) pulled to within 24-17 with an 82-yard, 14-play drive that Blaise Bryant capped with a six-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter.
But Minnesota flanker Kevin Grant sped 23 yards on a reverse two plays after the kickoff, and the Gophers were off on 12-play, 80-yard march that Thompson capped with his two-yard touchdown run with 10:41 left, making it 30-17.
Wisconsin 23, Toledo 10--Rich Thompson kicked three field goals and reserve quarterback Sean Wilson passed for two touchdowns in leading the Badgers over the Rockets at Madison, Wis.
Wilson, who completed nine of 12 passes for 109 yards, replaced starter Lionell Crawford late in the second quarter after the Badger offense failed to generate a touchdown drive. Wisconsin led 6-3 at the half.
Toledo’s Mark Melfi, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 216 yards, passed 21 yards to Rick Isaiah for a touchdown that made it 13-10 at the outset of the fourth quarter.
A 37-yard field goal by Thompson with 3:26 left made it 16-10.
Wilson then passed 17 yards to Aaron Brown for a touchdown with 1:13 left.
Both teams are now 1-1.
Michigan St. 49, Miami (Ohio) 0--Tailback Blake Ezor scored three touchdowns and gained 130 yards in 18 first-half carries as the Spartans routed the Redskins at East Lansing, Mich.
Ezor, who sat out the second half, outgained the entire Miami offense, which had only 117 total yards. Backup tailback Scott Selzer replaced Ezor and scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, from nine and four yards out for Michigan State (1-0).
Things went wrong right from the start for the Redskins (0-2).
Lydell Willis fumbled the opening kickoff and John Kiple recovered for the Spartans on the Miami 20. Ezor picked up 17 yards on the next carry, and two plays later dove over from a yard out for his first touchdown.
Indiana 24, Missouri 7--Anthony Thompson rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns and the Hoosiers sacked Tiger quarterback Kent Kiefer six times to win at Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana, hurt early by penalties, broke a 7-7 halftime tie in the third quarter with Thompson’s second touchdown on a three-yard run.
Scott Bonnell kicked a 34-yard field goal late in the third period, then Thompson, who also scored in the second quarter on a 12-yard run, clinched the game with a 35-yard touchdown run with 3:52 to go in the fourth quarter.
Both teams are 1-1.
