THE GARDEN GROVE SHOOTINGS : ORANGE COUNTY’S GANG TOLL
Some recent gang-related killings in the county.
May 28, 1988--Cornelia Mitchell, 82, of Buena Park was fatally shot by a bullet that pierced her home in what police said was gunfire from gang members, who were shooting at a rival gang member running past her home.
July 3, 1988--Aburto Olympo, 18, of Santa Ana was killed and three people were injured after a gang-related argument erupted into gunfire in a parking lot at Centennial Regional Park in Santa Ana.
July 25, 1988--Kerry Eugene Majors, 20, of Santa Ana was shot to death and four others were wounded in a Santa Ana neighborhood in an argument over a can of beer. Police said the victims were all members of a gang.
April 30--Javier Evangelista, 22, of Santa Ana was slain in a drive-by shooting in Santa Ana. Witnesses said the victim was shot as he stood talking with friends. As a red Monte Carlo drove by, they said, a passenger in the front seat suddenly pulled a handgun, shouted the gang name “F-Troop!” and fired about five times, hitting Evangelista twice.
July 11--Miguel Angel Guzman, 27, of Santa Ana was killed in Santa Ana by shotgun fire in what police said was a random, drive-by shooting. Police said the victim was fired upon as he walked down the street. Police are investigating possible gang involvement.
July 15--Mark Anthony Brooks, 19, of Santa Ana was shot to death and two of his friends were wounded in Santa Ana in what police investigators classified as a shooting related to gangs. The shooting took place in a convenience store parking lot as three young men in one car pulled up next to another and one of them opened fire with a semiautomatic assault rifle.
