Cal Defeats UCI in Water Polo, 9-5
California defeated UC Irvine, 9-5, to win the UC Irvine water polo tournament Sunday.
After Irvine’s Dan Smoot tied the score, 3-3, with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter, the Golden Bears went on to score five unanswered goals to take an 8-3 advantage and secure the championship.
Irvine (5-1) was led by Julian Harvey, who scored two goals.
The Anteaters won their morning semifinal game against USC, 14-6, with Harvey scoring six goals.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Cal State Fullerton 1, San Diego State 0--Forward Adam Lehner stole the ball and scored at the 53:50 mark to give host Fullerton the victory.
Cal State Bakersfield 4, UC Irvine 2--Visiting Bakersfield outscored Irvine, 3-0, in the second half. Irvine tied the score, 1-1, at the 36:19 mark on Gerald Slater’s kick from five yards out. Slater gave Irvine its lead one minute and 40 seconds later as he deflected Darren BeDolla’s pass for a goal.
