Motor Racing Roundup : Earnhardt Edges Martin at Dover Downs
Dale Earnhardt outdueled Mark Martin over the final 34 laps to win the Peak Performance 500 Sunday at Dover Downs International Speedway at Dover, Del.
A four-car crash in which Neil Bonnett was shaken but not seriously injured stopped the race for almost 12 minutes.
When the green flag waved again with 38 laps left, Earnhardt’s Chevrolet Lumina was just in front of Martin’s Ford Thunderbird.
Martin, who still is trying to win his first NASCAR Winston Cup race, kept the pressure on Earnhardt, the series point leader, finishing only one-tenth of a second behind after the two bumped twice during the final 20-lap sprint to the checkered flag.
Earnhardt won for the fourth time this season and the 38th time in his career, increasing his points lead over second-place Rusty Wallace 102 with six races remaining.
Mauro Baldi of Italy won the World Sports Prototype Championship at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, and closed in on his Sauber Mercedes teammate Jean-Louis Schlesser of France in the world standings.
Teamed with Ireland’s Kenny Acheson, Baldi won the 480-kilometer race on the hilly circuit, more than two minutes ahead of the Porsche team of France’s Bob Wollek and West German Frank Jelinski. Britons Julian Bailey and Mark Blundel were third in a Nissan.
Darrell Gwynn, John Force and Bob Glidden won their categories at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa.
Gwynn earned his second consecutive national event victory after a midseason slump with a win over defending Winston top-fuel champion Joe Amato.
Force earned his first victory of the season by defeating Bruce Larson in the funny car final.
Glidden, a nine-time Winston pro-stock champion, gained his 75th victory, beating Bruce Allen.
