Brea : Boys and Girls Club to Reopen at New Site

The Brea Boys and Girls Club will reopen later this month when a temporary building is moved to a small lot owned by the city. The club was forced out of its former facility because of building rehabilitation at Laurel Elementary School.

About 300 boys and girls are awaiting the opening of the new center.

The new facility, a 1,200-square-foot building on Sievers Avenue, will be used until a permanent location can be found. Dick Guthrie, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said the Sievers Avenue address would be rented from the city for $1 a year on a three-year lease. He said the club will add some amenities, including a fence and some landscaping.

Activities scheduled for the new site, which should open later this month, include computer education, arts and crafts, sports and group activities. Also planned is a reading program, along with tutoring and homework assistance.

Guthrie said discussions are under way with the Brea School District for the club to use a new gymnasium and other facilities being built at Brea Junior High School.

In its four separate sites, 3,000 boys and girls belong to the La Habra-Brea clubs.
