Sockers Holding One-Week Tryout Camp for Rookies

The Sockers opened a one-week rookie camp Monday, offering tryouts to 25 athletes from around the world, including England, Belgium, Scotland, Canada and Mexico.

Players will practice twice a day, running through various drills and scrimmaging. Standouts will be invited to the Sockers’ veteran camp, which starts Monday.

FOOTBALL

Vista High School graduate and former University of Colorado quarterback Sal Aunese, suffering from a rare form of cancer, was back in the hospital Monday. But his doctor said there was no major change and he expects Aunese to go home by the end of the week.

Dr. Wayne Gersoff, Colorado’s team doctor, said a small amount of fluid had entered Aunese’s lungs through an opening that had been eaten away by cancerous cells. The fluid was drained, Gersoff said, and contained no cancerous cells.

Aunese’s current condition is stable and his overall condition remains unchanged, Gersoff said.

MEN’S SOCCER

Chris Romey and Scott Rommel scored first-half goals as visiting UC San Diego (4-0-1) defeated Southern California College, 2-0. Marc Melnik and Jarrett Stevenson had the assists.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The annual San Diego County Volleyball Championships will be held at UCSD’s Triton Pavilion Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m. UCSD, U.S. International, University of San Diego and defending champion San Diego State will participate in the event.
