P.M. BRIEFING : No Accord in U.S.-Japan Steel Talks
TOKYO — Japan and the United States have failed to reach agreement in steel trade negotiations and agreed to continue talks in Washington next week, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said today.
The discussions, which ended Tuesday, centered on a new annual quota for Japanese steel exports to the United States, starting Oct. 1, under the voluntary restraint arrangements, ministry officials said.
Under current arrangements, due to expire at the end of this month, Japan’s steel exports to the United States are limited to a maximum of 5.8% of U.S. consumption.
