College Roundup : CS Bakersfield Fends Off Master’s in Men’s Soccer, 2-1
Cal State Bakersfield scored twice in the second half to thwart an upset bid and defeat The Master’s, 2-1, in a nonconference men’s soccer match Tuesday at Bakersfield.
Chris Bingman scored five minutes into the match to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead over Bakersfield, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II poll.
The Roadrunners countered 10 minutes into the second half with a goal that deflected off a Master’s defender. Bakersfield (7-0) took its first lead 15 minutes later by scoring on another deflection.
The Master’s fell to 3-3-1.
In other men’s soccer matches:
Cal Lutheran 2, Christ College Irvine 0--Juniors Casey Pirih and Larry Gidley each scored in the second half for the Kingsmen (2-2) in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.
Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Dave Salzwedel made seven saves.
Moorpark 1, Mission 0--Freshman forward Richy Rungaitis scored at the 80-minute mark to give Moorpark (2-1) a nonleague victory at Pierce.
Moorpark goalkeeper Dan Madsen recorded nine saves. Mission is 0-3.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pierce d. West L.A., 15-3, 13-15, 15-13, 15-8--Anna Suarez had 22 kills for Pierce (3-0, 2-0) in a Western State Conference match at Westchester High. Pierce setter Amy Sodek added 47 assists and eight kills. Carina Sailer had eight kills.
Master’s d. Pacific Christian, 15-9, 15-8, 15-12--Master’s overcame deficits of 4-0, 5-0 and 5-0 in consecutive games to win the nonconference match at home. Brenda Bement had eight kills, Anne Zingleman added seven and Teresa Stanley had six to lead Master’s (8-14).
