Pamela J. Bjorkman, assistant professor of biology at Caltech, is one of 20 outstanding young researchers to be named a 1989 Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts of Philadelphia. She will receive $200,000 to support her research over the next four years. Bjorkman’s research is in X-ray crystallography, work aimed at determining and investigating the three-dimensional structure of proteins that are significant in the immune system.
V. Barbara Bush has been named dean of students at Scripps College in Claremont. She previously served as resident director at Illinois State University, assistant dean of students at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, assistant director of campus activities and residential life at Cal State Northridge, and director of the Center for Student Life at Cal State Los Angeles.
Cliff Sjogren of Pasadena has been named dean of admissions and financial aid at USC. He formerly was director of admissions at the University of Michigan.
Sandy Grabiner, professor of mathematics at Pomona College in Claremont, has received a $25,225 grant from the National Science Foundation to support his research on the applications of Banach Algebras.
Donald A. Reed has been appointed headmaster of Webb School of California in Claremont, a day and boarding school for boys in grades 9-12.
Dan Sturkie has been named chief of the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, largest of the six animal shelters run by the county Department of Animal Care and Control. Sturkie, who has worked for the department for 10 years, has been senior animal control officer at the Carson shelter.
Cathy De Petro and Carmine Lanza have been appointed to the city of Covina Alcohol, Drug and Child Abuse Commission, which educates the community on the subjects of substance and child abuse.
