Florida to Close Clinic Over Reports of Botched Abortions
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Bob Martinez on Friday ordered an abortion clinic closed because of reports of botched abortions and directed a state agency to come up with tougher rules to protect women at private clinics.
Martinez denied that he was using the situation to enact emergency regulations on abortion just weeks before the Legislature takes up the issue in special session.
He told Health and Rehabilitative Services Secretary Greg Coler to begin steps to revoke the license of the Women’s Service Center after a report in the Miami Herald about improper abortions by unlicensed physicians that resulted in ruptured uteri and hysterectomies.
