Iran Marks Start of Persian Gulf War
ATHENS — Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani, reviewing troops at a parade marking the start of the Persian Gulf War nine years ago, Friday warned the military to be prepared for possible attacks against Iran’s borders, Tehran Radio said.
It was the second time in a week that Iran warned of the possibility of renewed war with Iraq.
The official Islamic Republic News Agency said the parade was held at the shrine of the late Iranian leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, where military hardware and equipment seized from Iraqi troops during the war were displayed.
A Tehran Radio dispatch monitored in Athens quoted Rafsanjani as saying that Iran gained valuable experience from the war, but “we must maintain the necessary preparedness” in case the country is attacked again, he said in an address to the units from the army, navy, air force and the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards.
