Southwest Upsets No. 2 Lincoln
SAN DIEGO — Dion Walker’s fourth-quarter heroics enabled Southwest to upset unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Lincoln, 21-18, Friday afternoon at Southwest.
Walker recovered a fumble at the Southwest 47-yard line to set up Junior Ochoa’s winning touchdown run from the 10 with 3:48 remaining. The key play in the drive was a 19-yard reception by Walker on a third and three. Walker then made an interception at the 11-yard line to stop Lincoln’s comeback bid with 1:42 left.
The victory was Southwest’s first against two losses. Lincoln’s season-opening winning streak was snapped at three.
“I hope this is what gets them in gear,” Southwest Coach Carl Parrick said. “We watched a good Point Loma team get trashed by (Lincoln), so we were looking at 0-3. Then the guys came out and did it.”
Walker finished with five receptions for 36 yards. Junior Ochoa (17 carries, 77 yards) scored the Raiders’ three touchdowns on runs of seven and 10 yards and on a 30-yard pass from Andy Quinn (six of 12, 66 yards).
Lincoln’s Doug Boyd scored two touchdowns, and Michael Temple (nine of 17, 185 yards) connected with Victor Dean on a 52-yard pass for the other. The Hornets missed all three conversions on two kicks and a pass attempt.
