Imprisoned Mafia Murderers Shake Hands With Pope
From United Press International
VOLTERRA, Italy — Pope John Paul II shook hands with Mafia drug traffickers and murderers Saturday during a visit to the 13th-Century fortress prison in central Italy.
The Pope’s visit to the top security prison in the farming town of Volterra highlighted the second day of his weekend tour of four cities in Tuscany.
Seated on a small platform in the jail’s fenced soccer field where the 150 inmates were gathered, the pontiff heard a welcome address read by Rocco Morano, 26, serving a 21-year sentence for murder.
