College Roundup : UC Irvine Wins Air Force Water Polo Event
Pablo Yrizar scored three goals in the second quarter as the UC Irvine water polo team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 11-6, to win the Air Force tournament Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Irvine (9-1), ranked second in the nation, finished the round-robin tournament undefeated. Santa Barbara (7-2) led, 3-1, after one quarter but the Anteaters outscored the Gauchos, 8-0, during the next two periods.
Irvine’s Skylar Putman led all scorers with four goals. Santa Barbara’s Ed Weldon had three.
In men’s nonleague soccer:
Cal State Fullerton 2, U.S. International 1--Thomas Valentine scored with three minutes remaining for the Titans at home. It was Valentine’s third goal of the season for the Titans (6-1). USIU’s James Santini had tied the score on a penalty shot two minutes earlier. Travis England scored first for the Titans with 15 minutes left to play.
UC Irvine 1, UC San Diego 1--San Diego’s Wallace Whittier scored with about seven minutes remaining to tie the host Anteaters. Irvine (4-2-1) had taken the lead 10 minutes earlier on freshman Kevin Smith’s third goal of the season.
