Ted Schulz shot a four-under-par 66 and won his first PGA tournament title, the $400,000 Southern Open, by one shot over Tim Simpson and Jay Haas at Columbus, Ga.
Simpson had a 63--267 over the par-70, 6,775-yard Green Island Country Club course. Haas had a 68.
Schulz, who was two shots off the lead at the start of play, never faltered. He gained a share of the lead at No. 10 and took sole possession when he birdied No. 17, his fifth birdie of the day, making a 15-footer to finish with a 266.
Third-round leader David Canipe, who held a one-stroke lead over Haas and Dave Rummells entering the round, faltered early and shot a 76 to finish at 274. Rummells shot a 73 for a 272.
Bob Tway, Larry Rinker and Lance Ten Broeck were next at 270. Tway had a 67, Rinker a 68 and Ten Broeck a 69.
