SOCCER
Players trying out on the first day of the Sockers’ training camp included Donald Cogsville, first-round draft choice from North Carolina, Kyle Whittemore, third-round pick from SDSU, Raffaele Ruotolo, cut last year after three consecutive seasons with the Sockers, and free agent Ben Collins.
Two unsigned players from last year’s championship team are in camp, veteran Steve Zungul and Ralf Wilhelms, a reserve defender. Arturo Velazco, a defender from last year’s Auto Trader reserve team, and former Socker Jacques Ladouceur also are trying out.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State lost to visiting Hawaii, 15-10, 15-12, 15-12, Monday in a Big West Conference game. Malin Fransson led Hawaii (8-0, 2-0) with 19 kills. Amy Erben led SDSU (9-7, 2-1) with 13 kills.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
UC San Diego remains undefeated after shutting out host Redlands (2-3), 4-0. After a scoreless first half, Karin Lindsay, Sheila Takahashi, Heather Mauro and Felicia Faro each scored for UCSD (7-0). UCSD has outscored opponents, 36-0, and is ranked second in the NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll.
FOOTBALL
Darrin Wagner, San Diego State freshman redshirt and Lincoln High graduate, was named Western Athletic Conference player of the week. In the Aztecs’ 41-41 tie with Cal State Fullerton, Wagner scored two touchdowns and gained 161 yards in 22 carries.
