Ann De Jarnett, Now Part of Acoustic Duo, Will Return to Stage
Ann De Jarnett, the talented singer-violinist who put out a strong EP and debut album, “Possessions,” on the Orange-based Dr. Dream record label, is returning to public performance for the first time since last spring with shows Oct. 12 at Beneath Broadway, in the Broadlind Hotel in Long Beach, and Oct. 13 at Bogart’s in Long Beach.
But De Jarnett has made some changes: She has parted with her electric rock band, the Falcons, and is performing now in an acoustic duo with guitarist Jim Bemis, formerly of the Long Beach rock band Chain Gang.
“I went through a whole lot of changes last summer,” De Jarnett said this week. “I had some weird medical problems that put me out of commission for a while. I just needed to tone down my life for a while.
“I don’t know when I’ll get another band together, but I’d like to move in a not-quite-so-pop direction. It’s a time when I can write new songs and really figure out what the heck it is I do want to see happen for me musically.”
De Jarnett said she has split with Dr. Dream, because, she said, she felt she did not get enough promotional and tour support from the label after her album was released last fall.
David Hansen, vice president of Dr. Dream, said he had not spoken with De Jarnett since she took her break from performing. Hansen said the label had been planning “a big summer tour” for De Jarnett when her illness interrupted their plans.
“When she had her outside problems, it just chilled everything we had planned for her, which was kind of frustrating,” he said.
