Fairplex Favorites Will Be Outside Looking In for Weekend Stakes
Some stakes favorites have drawn the outside post positions in large fields--the worst place to be on a short track--as the 18-day Los Angeles County Fair meet ends this weekend at Fairplex Park in Pomona.
Today, in the $100,000 Pomona Derby, Endow is on the outside in a 10-horse field. Flying Continental will start from the No. 8 post and another contender, Top Drink, will have the No. 7 post.
Sunday, in the $150,000 Pomona Handicap, He’s a Saros, winner of the stake the last two years, will break from No. 11 in a 12-horse field. The lineup for the race, in order of post position, is You’re No Bargain, Conquering Hero, Jet Ski, Speedratic, Just As Lucky, Recitation Spin, Crackbell, Leafee, Stylish Winner, Might Snow, He’s a Saros and Individualist. Presidents Summit, who is on the also-eligible list, might get to run if Individualist runs instead in today’s Bay Meadows Budweiser Breeders’ Cup.
Trainer Blane Schvaneveldt has four of the 10 starters--Flomont, Ooh a Sensation, Westhoff and Cash Signature--in tonight’s $500,000 Dash for Cash Futurity for quarter horses at Los Alamitos.
Winning Colors, who hasn’t won a stake since winning the 1988 Kentucky Derby, will run today in the Budweiser Breeders’ Cup at Turfway Park. Chris McCarron will ride the filly.
