Corona del Mar Wins as Lucas Gains 188 Yards
Tailback Brian Lucas rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead Corona del Mar High School to a 41-13 nonleague victory over Laguna Hills Friday night on Newport Harbor’s Davidson Field.
Lucas carried 25 times and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 10-yard run in the first quarter. Lucas, who scored on a pair of one-yard dives in the second half, gained 83 yards in Corona del Mar’s 21-point first quarter.
Corona del Mar (3-1) had 178 yards in total offense in the opening 12 minutes of play. Wide receiver Weston Johnson had Corona del Mar’s two other scores in the first quarter, catching a 55-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Todd Kehrli and running 15 yards for another score on a reverse.
Laguna Hills (1-3) totaled 206 yards and trailed, 21-13, at halftime. Quarterback Mark Wells scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter and tailback Marwan Saba scored on 22-yard run in the second quarter.
Corona del Mar limited Laguna Hills to 31 yards in total offense in the second half.
