Roundup : Corona del Mar Easily Wins Rough Game of Water Polo
Corona del Mar’s water polo team defeated Harvard, 9-4, at Heritage Park. Ryan Weir led all scorers with three goals. Scott Tucker and Gunner Gustafson each scored two goals. Robbie Pike had 14 saves for Corona del Mar.
Seven Harvard players were ejected in the fourth quarter and the game was called with 18 seconds left because of Harvard’s rough play.
Harvard’s goalie was ejected with 1:30 left for pulling down the goal as a Corona del Mar player took a shot.
In other South Coast tournament games:
Corona del Mar 15, Irvine 1--Brandon Howald had five goals to lead Corona del Mar over Irvine in a second-round match at Heritage Park. Gunner Gustafson had three goals and Robbie Pike had 16 saves for Corona del Mar.
Tustin 5, University 4--Jeremy Yorba scored three goals and goalie Mike Gonzalez had 12 saves to lead Tustin in a consolation game at Tustin.
Villa Park 6, Tustin 5--Gavin Arroyo scored three goals to lead Villa Park. The Spartans had a 6-3 lead in fourth quarter. Mike deLancellotti scored two for Tustin.
In nonleague water polo:
Sonora 7, El Segundo 6--Phil Lochmiller had three goals for host Sonora (3-4). Toby Holdridge had 13 saves.
In nonleague tennis:
Edison 17, Newport Harbor 1--Nikki Turner and Laura Oleson won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for host Edison (8-2). Kristen Fleming won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Kim Willauer won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 in singles for Edison.
Capistrano Valley 12, Bishop (La Jolla) 6--The doubles team of Cori Emmons and Tauna Schweinberg of Capistrano Valley (6-0) won by a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 score.
Troy 10, Savanna 8--Savanna’s Cindy Kuragami swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, but visiting Savanna (3-5, 1-1) could not overcome Troy’s superior team effort.
