International Business Machines Corp. today said it has offered employees at four locations voluntary separation in a continuing cost reduction effort unrelated to last week’s announcement of lower earnings.

“We expect 600 to 1,000 to elect to retire or resign from the business,” a spokesman for the computer giant said.

He said the offer of one week’s pay for each six months of service is being made to the 23,000 employees at facilities in Manassas, Va.; Lexington, Ky.; Endicott, N.Y., and Owego, N.Y.

The offer does not include engineers and programmers, the spokesman said.
