Conservancy to Begin Study on New Trails
Gov. George Deukmejian has signed legislation requiring the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to prepare plans for hiking and horseback-riding trails in the mountains encircling the San Fernando Valley.
The bill, written by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar) is intended to improve public access in mountain areas acquired by the conservancy, a state agency that buys land for parks.
Katz’s legislation directs the conservancy to prepare a trail development plan by June for the Rim of the Valley Corridor, a loop of land more than 100 miles in circumference running through the Santa Monica, San Gabriel, Santa Susana, Simi and Verdugo mountains.
Last week, the governor signed another bill extending the life of the conservancy for five years. In 1985, the Legislature directed the conservancy to acquire and maintain parkland in the Rim of the Valley area.
