National City
The man accused of being the hit-and-run driver of a car that killed a pregnant mother and her 5-year-old daughter last week pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment.
Pablo Salvador Cabrera, 22, of San Diego, was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, hit and run, driving under a revoked or suspended license and driving without insurance.
On Thursday, Martha Lidia Zamudio, 25, who was eight months pregnant, and Lillian Beth Zamudio were killed in National City while they were crossing a busy street.
The driver sped off, and another man who had damage to his car was arrested. However, after an investigation, that man was released and National City Police said Cabrera was the suspect.
Cabrera was arrested Saturday after a chase that began in Clairemont.
The South Bay Municipal Court judge in Chula Vista set bail for Cabrera at $300,000 and ordered a bail review.
A preliminary hearing was set for October 30.
The victims were buried Tuesday after a service in Tijuana. Some of the victim’s relatives attended Cabrera’s arraignment.
