San Diego Sports et Cetera : Aztecs Stunned in Volleyball

Just four days after defeating sixth-ranked Texas, San Diego State’s women’s volleyball team lost to Cal State Fullerton for the first time in 33 meetings.

Fullerton (6-7, 1-3), which won 15-12, 15-9, 16-18, 15-11 at home, also ended a 34-match Big West Conference losing streak that dated to the 1987 season.

San Diego State (11-9, 2-2), ranked 22nd in the nation, was led by Amy Erben’s 20 kills and 15 digs. Jennifer Miller had 14 kills.

Cal Baptist defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 15-4, 15-3, 8-15, 15-6, in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s game. Donna Kieger led Cal Baptist (21-2, 5-0), ranked fifth by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, with seven kills. Lynnette Campbell had three kills for Point Loma Nazarene (9-3, 2-2).

SOCCER

The San Diego Sockers announced that forward Steve Zungul and rookie Arturo Velazco have signed one-year contracts.

Zungul, 35, scored 10 goals and seven assists for the Sockers in the playoffs last season. Velazco, a native San Diegan, joins the Sockers from the San Diego Nomads where he played from 1986 through 1989. Velazco, 24, also played four years at La Jolla High.

BASEBALL

Former Padre outfielder Johnny Grubb has signed with the Orlando Juice, the Senior Professional Baseball Association team announced Tuesday.

Grubb, 41, played with the Padres from 1972 to 1976. His best season was 1973, when he led the Padres with a .311 average. Grubb also played for Cleveland, Texas and Detroit in a major league career that ended in 1987.

The eight-team Florida-based league for players 35 and over is scheduled to open its inaugural season Nov. 1.
