NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Defense Rests in Rep. Garcia’s Trial

Conceding the congressman made a mistake in “judgment,” defense lawyers for Rep. Robert Garcia (D-N.Y.) concluded their arguments in his corruption trial in New York City. Garcia, 56, and his wife, Jane Lee, 48, are accused in a seven-count indictment of accepting $185,100 in payoffs from the scandal-ridden defense contractor Wedtech Corp. The indictment also alleged the Garcias obtained a $20,000, no-interest loan from a Wedtech executive. The jury was due to begin deliberations today.
