CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF - SAN FRANCISCO - Court Order Forces Army to Free Dogs
Nineteen greyhounds were released by an Army hospital in San Francisco after an animal rights group won a court order halting research that would have involved breaking the animals’ hind legs. The hospital had acquired the dogs for studies on the mending of fractured bones. Letterman General Hospital was ordered to release the dogs to the Marin Humane Society.
