COLLEGE ROUNDUP - CSUN Winning Streak in Volleyball Hits 50
Cal State Northridge won its 50th consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Assn. home volleyball match by sweeping Cal State Los Angeles, 15-1, 15-6, 15-11, in less than an hour.
Northridge (12-8, 2-2 in CCAA matches), tied with Regis College for fifth in the latest NCAA Division II poll, had a team hitting percentage of .282, while Cal State L. A. (3-11, 0-3) struggled with a .014 hitting percentage.
Freshman outside hitter Patty Fitzsimmons and junior outside hitter Marianne Dixon led Northridge with seven kills each.
Nancy Nichols added six kills and sophomore setter Karen Scholl had 18 assists.
Northridge Coach Walt Ker cleared his bench after the first game, and reserves played extensively in the final two games.
Junior outside hitter Cecilia Casillas provided much of what offense Cal State L. A. could muster with five kills.
In other volleyball matches:
Grand Canyon d. Cal Lutheran, 15-4, 15-12, 15-7--Cal Lutheran tumbled to 0-16 after a loss to visiting Grand Canyon, 23-5 and ranked eighth in National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics poll.
Jenifer Larson led the Regals with nine kills. Larson entered the match ranked fifth in NAIA District 3 with a .370 hitting percentage, but she managed only a .195 percentage against Grand Canyon. Brenda Lee had four digs and four blocks, and setter Debbie Wolfe recorded 15 assists for CLU.
Theresa Kennedy led Grand Canyon with eight kills.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Master’s 11, California Maritime 0--Jim Rickard scored three goals and Chris Bingman and Russ Spencer each added two for Master’s in the nonconference match at home.
The other goals were scored by Jorge Barba, Jon Neidnagel, Mike Rozsa and Olin Bakke, as Master’s, the NAIA’s 15th-ranked team, improved to 9-3-3.
Moorpark 4, Hancock 1--Eric Gunter scored two goals and Billy Kranz and Richy Rungaitis each added a goal for Moorpark (5-2-1, 1-0-0) in a Western State Conference match at Hancock.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Moorpark 4, El Camino 0--Moorpark (10-1-1, 4-1-1) closed a seven-game home stand by shutting out El Camino in a South Coast Conference game.
Stephanie Gainey, Kristin Mealiffe, Nikky Argenti and Wendy Berna all scored for Moorpark. Goalie Rustie Stevens had seven saves in recording her fourth shutout.
WATER POLO
Cuesta 18, Valley 7--Both teams were undefeated in the Western State Conference, but visiting Cuesta (3-0 in league play) routed Valley (10-8, 2-1) behind Jamie Stuart’s four goals. Nick Kaufman scored two goals for Valley.
