Supervisors OK $1.5-Million Expansion of Juvenile Hall

Los Angeles County supervisors approved a $1.5-million expansion Tuesday at the overcrowded San Fernando Juvenile Hall in Sylmar.

The dormitories have a present population of 560 in an area meant for 393. The county Probation Department accommodates the overflow by placing mattresses on the floor of recreation areas.

The project will add two prefabricated portable buildings, each with space for 30 minors 14 to 16 years old awaiting a court date or placement elsewhere.

Up to six additional staff members will also be added.

The new dormitories of 3,440 square feet each will be placed in the southwest corner of the parking lot. Officials in the Probation Department hope to have the new units open by February.

The project is expected to return to the board later this month so supervisors can approve a contract with the building manufacturer.
