BUENA PARK : Discussions Reopen on New Arts Facility
The City Council has agreed to reconsider its decision delaying the construction of a new arts facility.
The council’s action came after members and supporters of the local Cultural Arts Commission urged the city to move ahead with the project.
In a letter read to council members this week, cultural arts chairwoman Ruth Walp asked the city to reopen discussions on the project.
Walp’s letter said her group had concluded that the recreational center on Knott Avenue is unacceptable as a site because of poor visibility and insufficient parking. Instead, she suggested that a new arts facility be part of a reconstruction plan for the Civic Center.
“The Civic Center needs to be redone,” Walp said. “It was built 32 years ago and is not earthquake-sound and has no safety provisions.”
The council agreed to reopen discussions about finding a home for an arts center, but some members expressed concern about the financial impact of the proposal.
Council members Donald L. Bone and Rhonda J. McCune maintained their position that the recreation center would be suitable.
