Thousand Oaks Climbs to 7th in State Volleyball Poll
Thousand Oaks High’s volleyball team is ranked seventh in the state in the latest coaches poll. The Lancers (10-0) also are ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 4-A Division.
The state’s top-ranked team is Mira Costa, one of five Southern Section teams in the top 10. Corona del Mar, Santa Barbara and Laguna Beach hold down the second through fourth positions.
Julius Naveira of North Hollywood won the Men’s 3.5 Class C division in the 103rd Southern California Sectional Tennis Championships with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Andy Groenveld of South Pasadena.
Other Valley-area participants included Rudy Vargas of Reseda, who lost in the Men’s 4.0 Class B Division to Dean Stackel of Los Angeles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; and Wilma Camera of Northridge, who fell in the Women’s 4.5 Class B+ division to Holly Kuwayama of Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-3.
Two celebrity golf invitationals are scheduled to be held in the Valley area, starting with the 22nd Tim Conway Celebrity Golf Invitational on Oct. 22 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.
Admission is $2 per person and gates open at 8 a.m. Among those scheduled to play are: Fernando Valenzuela, Harvey Korman and Frankie Avalon.
On Nov. 13, “Skipper” of “Gilligan’s Island” fame will play host to the Alan Hale Celebrity Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge to benefit the Valley Senior Service and Resource Center. Entry fee is $200.

Garrett Garland has established the course record at the Encino municipal golf course in the Sepulveda Basin.
Garland, who lives in Los Angeles and works as a golf pro at the course, shot a 10-under 62 Tuesday to break the record of 63 set by Joe Gallardo in 1983. Garland had nine birdies, one bogey on No. 15 and an eagle on No. 8.
