LOCAL : Golden State Freeway North Closed by Spill of Corrosive
Authorities closed the northbound Golden State Freeway this morning in Pacoima after a traffic accident caused a corrosive, acid-based substance to spill onto the freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
One person was slightly hurt in the 9:15 a.m. accident on the northbound freeway at Terra Bella Street, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Alan Barrios said. There were no evacuations.
A flatbed truck was carrying 10 55-gallon drums of the toxic chemical when it was struck by another vehicle, Barrios said. Several of the drums were torn open in the accident.
The spill forced the CHP to close the northbound freeway at 9:41 a.m. so the toxic material could be cleaned up, CHP officer Monty Keifer said. Authorities did not know how far into the afternoon the effort would last, Barrios said.
The closure of the freeway backed up traffic for more than a mile on the northbound Golden State and Hollywood freeways, Keifer said.
