Pacifica High School scored 24 points in the second quarter en route to a 38-7 romp over Garden Grove Thursday night in Garden Grove League play at Bolsa Grande High.

Pacifica’s fourth consecutive victory and 17th in its past 18 league games featured the passing of quarterback Bobby Anderson and the running of tailback Chris Shockley.

Anderson completed 11 of 19 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, including one for 28 yards to wide receiver Jim Lochner that pushed Pacifica ahead, 17-0, midway through the second quarter.

Garden Grove (3-4, 1-3) countered with a short pass play from quarterback Darrell Rall to fullback Alex Ripley that Ripley turned into a 71-yard touchdown with 57 seconds remaining in the half.

The big play seemed to fire up Pacifica (4-2-1, 4-0) as the Mariners scored once more with three seconds remaining when Anderson threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Shockley.

Shockley gained 154 yards in 27 carries before coming out early in the third quarter. He scored on two short runs and the pass play, giving him 11 touchdowns for the season. He has scored 31 touchdowns in his career.

Neither team could generate any offense until midway through the second quarter, and Pacifica Coach Bill Craven said he anticipated a letdown.

“I could tell during warmups that we were going to be flat,” Craven said. “I thought our defense did a good job not allowing their quarterback (Rall) or Ripley to penetrate. We wanted to slow down Ripley before he got a head of steam going.”

Pacifica limited Garden Grove to six yards rushing but Rall was impressive in his varsity debut, completing 12 of 21 passes for 169 yards.
