Foothill Hangs On to Its 19-14 Victory Over Canyon
TUSTIN — Foothill High School won its second consecutive Century League game Friday night with a 19-14 victory over Canyon in front of 1,200 at Tustin High School.
Canyon (2-5, 0-2) scored first after George Garcia wrested the ball from Foothill kickoff returner Ricky Robinson on the Foothill 30-yard line and returned it 22 yards to the 8. Three plays later, quarterback Chuck Nickerson scored from the one.
Foothill (4-3, 2-0) tied the score with 4:13 left in the quarter when quarterback John Shanahan passed 10 yards to tight end Roman Slobodynskyj and Kent Donnelly kicked the extra point.
Donnelly kicked two field goals in the second quarter, of 27 and then 43 yards, to make it 13-7 at halftime.
Foothill scored again with 7:26 left in the third quarter when Shanahan hit wide receiver Greg Clark with a three-yard pass for a 19-7 lead.
Canyon made it close with 3:30 remaining when Nickerson hit Lee Torres with a 10-yard touchdown pass.
