Chicago businessmen Bertram Lee and Peter Bynoe are poised again to assume ownership of the Denver Nuggets, this time with the financial backing of former Turner Broadcasting president Robert Wussler.
The purchase would make Lee and Bynoe the first black owners of a major league sports franchise, and the structure of the proposed deal calls for them to run the team as managing partners.
An earlier effort by Lee and Bynoe to buy the team from Sidney Shlenker collapsed Oct. 10 after the pair, having problems lining up suitable financing, missed a third deadline for closing the deal.
Directors of Wussler’s company, Comsat Video Enterprises of Washington, are scheduled to vote on the $65-million deal. The sale is expected to be completed by Monday.
