P.M. BRIEFING : Post-Dispatch Union Shuns Offer
ST. LOUIS — The largest union of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has rejected a proposal for a five-year contract and authorized a strike if a new agreement can’t be reached when formal negotiations begin early next year.
Members of the St. Louis Newspaper Guild Local 47 on Sunday rejected the company’s early offer by a vote of 220 to 186, a spokeswoman said. The union then voted 286 to 29 to authorize a walkout if a contract can’t be reached when regular negotiations begin sometime after Jan. 1.
Major provisions of the contract offer were wage increases of 4% a year, the introduction of a drug-testing policy, the establishment of a “two-tier” wage system and the elimination of a “sympathy strike” clause.
