NATION : Quayle Gives Boost to N.J. Race
NEWARK, N.J. — Vice President Dan Quayle helped state Republicans raise about $150,000 today and told party supporters that putting a Democrat back in the governor’s chair would mean higher taxes for New Jersey.
Quayle told a crowd at a breakfast fund-raiser that Republican Rep. Jim Courter will move New Jersey forward if elected governor on Nov. 7 while Democratic Rep. James J. Florio would return the state to days of increased unemployment and high taxes.
“There are three things certain in life, and those are death, taxes and Democrats wanting to raise your taxes,” Quayle told the audience at the Radisson Hotel.
About 200 people paid $250 each to dine with Quayle and about 75 people paid $1,000 each to have their picture taken with him.
Courter has received heavy media attention for critical remarks on abortion and homosexuals. He first said homosexuals should be barred from teaching jobs and that he would sign a bill to outlaw abortion, but he later said he would not restrict abortion and would not move to restrict the hiring of homosexuals.
