Broncos Go Overtime to Top Seahawks, 24-21
SEATTLE — David Treadwell missed a 27-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in regulation, then made a 27-yarder in overtime as the Denver Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks, 24-21, Sunday.
The Broncos, leaders in the AFC West at 6-1, got a chance to win the game in overtime after Norm Johnson missed a 40-yard field-goal attempt earlier in the extra period.
Treadwell’s game-winning kick was set up by Seattle’s fourth turnover. Dennis Smith intercepted Dave Krieg’s pass over the middle for tight end Robert Tyler and ran it back 28 yards to the Seahawks’ 10-yard line.
Coach Dan Reeves immediately showed his faith in Treadwell, who also missed a pair of 46-yard field goal tries. Treadwell responded with his 13th field goal of the season.
Treadwell, coming into the game, was 12 for 13 this season, his only miss coming from 54 yards.
The Broncos tied the score at 21-21 with 2:19 to go on a 54-yard pass play, John Elway to Vance Johnson. They had a chance to win in regulation after a 47-yard pass play from Elway to Michael Young brought the ball to the Seattle nine. But Treadwell was wide right with a 27-yard attempt.
Young, a former Ram, was the Broncos’ leading receiver with six catches for 137 yards.
In the overtime, Seattle took the kickoff and drove to the Denver 22, but Johnson missed the 40-yard attempt wide left.
The defending AFC West champion Seahawks (3-4) went ahead 21-14 with 5:33 left on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Krieg to Paul Skansi. The Seahawks scored their third touchdown just three plays later after Elway fumbled the snap at the Denver 35 with 6:28 left. It was the Broncos’ only turnover.
Denver tied the score, 14-14, with 4:37 gone in the fourth quarter on a two-yard pass from Elway to Clarence Kay. The Broncos went 59 yards in four plays, including 49 on a pass to Mark Jackson to the Seattle 10 to open the drive.
