Aided by intermittent rains, firefighters contained a 9,500-acre blaze that started at Camp Pendleton during a military training exercise last week, officials said. U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Maryjane Cavaioli said the fire, which has cost $2.5 million to fight, would be controlled, or completely out, by Wednesday evening. “We still have some firefighters out there, mostly hand crews doing mop-up and rehabilitation work,” she said. Officials earlier estimated that nearly 11,000 acres of wilderness in San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties had burned, but revised the figure downward after better mapping out the fire’s scope.
