Democrat Fills House Seat of GOP’s Late Rep. Smith

WASHINGTON — Democrat Gene Taylor was sworn in Tuesday as the representative from Mississippi’s 5th District, taking the place of Republican Rep. Larkin Smith, who died Aug. 13 in a plane crash. Taylor, 36, won a special election Oct. 17.
