HEALTH : Medicaid-Backed AIDS Hospice
WALTHAM, Mass. — The nation’s first Medicaid-subsidized hospice for AIDS patients opened its doors today in this Boston suburb.
The facility, the Hospice at Mission Hill, will provide 18 beds for people suffering the final stages of AIDS, the disease which kills by destroying the body’s immune system.
More than 30 New England interior designers contributed their talents to the hospice, decorating each of the facility’s 16 rooms differently.
The hospice, located in a 19th-Century double-sized brownstone apartment building, will give tours of the facility for 10 days to raise money before admitting its first patients.
Medicaid, a federally funded health insurance program, will pay $298 of the $350 daily cost for a room at the hospice, a hospice official said.
There are 14 AIDS hospices in the United States.
