Legal Protections
In his letter (Oct. 15), Kevin Steinfeld suggested that “Lawyers have found too many loopholes in today’s legal system to help the guilty and hurt the innocent.” This gratuitous insult to the members of the legal profession cannot go unanswered.
What Steinfeld doesn’t realize is that what he considers loopholes are actually rights found in an ancient document called the United States Constitution. This is the same document that prevents government agents from breaking into our homes in the middle of the night and taking us away (a trick the Gestapo perfected in Nazi Germany), and prevents us from being deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.
I have seen it happen a thousand times, and I can tell you it will happen again. If and when Mr. Steinfeld is ever the subject of government prosecution, he would be right up there with everybody else making sure his lawyer demanded every right that he is entitled to under the U.S. Constitution. I doubt that he would call them “loopholes” at that time.
