2 More Bodies Found; Quake Toll Stands at 65
OAKLAND — The bodies of two more people have been pulled from the wreckage of the double-decked Nimitz Freeway, which collapsed during the rush hour in the devastating Oct. 17 earthquake.
Their discovery raised the total of motorists killed on the freeway to 41. The total of known dead in the magnitude 7.1 temblor reached 65.
The two victims reported by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday were Joyce Ann Mabry, 31, of Berkeley, and James Flores, 39, of Rohnert Park. Both were killed as their cars were crushed when the upper deck fell down.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Knudsen said, “Now we are checking the vehicles for personal belongings. We have no reason to believe there are any more bodies.”
The body of Mabry, the mother of a 3-year-old boy, was found about 7 p.m. Monday, Knudsen said. About 7 a.m. Tuesday, searchers found the body of Flores, the father of a teen-ager.
In addition to those killed under the collapsed freeway section, 12 bodies have been recovered in San Francisco, six in Santa Cruz County, five in Santa Clara County and one in Monterey County.
The state Office of Emergency Services said that, in addition to the dead, 3,089 people were injured in the temblor and 13,224 lost the use of their homes.
