STATE : School Bus Crash Injures 7
A Torrance school bus driver using his hands for sign language to quiet rambunctious hearing-impaired student passengers lost control of the bus and crashed today, slightly injuring the seven students, authorities said.
“He was trying to advise them to sit down in sign language, which required the use of both hands,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Donald Vine.
The driver, whose name was not immediately available, “wasn’t really paying attention and crashed into three parked cars,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Rick McClung. At least two of the cars were demolished, and the bus caught fire. The bus was southbound on Vermont Avenue, about 15 miles south of Los Angeles, when the accident occurred shortly before 8 a.m.
